Myanmar Negotiates Japanese Participation in Important Project

Naipyidaw, Aug 1 (Prensa Latina) Myanmar is currently negotiating a decisive participation of Japan as partner in the planned especial economic zone of Dawei, which includes a deep-water port to establish a trade link with foreign countries and several industrial complexes.

The national Committee that manages the important project agreed in 2008, expressed here special interest in a capital injection to generate electricity, starting from coal and using clean technology.

The president of that Committee, Thura Thaung Lwin, highlighted that need, faced with criticism and objections that emerged at that time from local communities and civic organizations, based in environmentalist worries.

After such discrepancies were expressed, Japan undertook investments in another special economic zone, in Thilawa, at a suggestion by Burmese Head of State Thein Sein.

The international community has opened spaces for Myanmar, after favourable decisions to democracy adopted by President Thein.

During a meeting yesterday in this capital between French Foreign Trade Minister Nicole Bricq and Burmese Finance Minister U Win Shein, France decided to cancel $550 million USD of Myanmar's debt of $1.1 billion USD.

Paris granted to Myanmar the possibility to pay the rest of the debt in a 15-year period, with a two-percent interest.
