Myanmar and Thai leaders reach agreement on establishing new border trade zone

A sideline  meeting of Myanmar and Thailand during the 18the ASEAN Summit was  held between President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Thein Sein and Thai Prime Minister Abhisit on 7 May 2011.


At the meeting, Myanmar and Thai leaders held the same view on the establishment of the new border trade zone and reached the agreement, said Deputy Government Spokesman of Thailand Mr. Supachai Chaisamut to Biweekly Eleven News Journal.

Moreover, leaders of the two countries made discussions on matters relating to Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand, security measures and construction of the road, added the Deputy Government Spokesman to Biweekly Eleven News Journal at Jakarta Convention Center where ASEAN Summit was held.

“Thai Prime Minster Abhisit suggested President of Myanmar U Thein Sein to open new border trade zones in Kanchanaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan at Thai border area. The Myanmar President agreed the establishment of the new border trade zones. The Myanmar President told the Thai Prime Minister to help solve the security problem occurring in the border area,” the Deputy Government Spokesman told Biweekly Eleven News Journal.

“Thailand is making arrangement to construct a road that can reach to India via Dawei from Thailand. The leaders of the two countries also discussed about the construction of the road to India during the meeting. The Myanmar President agreed that Myanmar will cooperate in the construction of the road with Thailand,” added the Deputy Government Spokesman to Biweekly Eleven News Journal.

Furthermore, the Thai Prime Minister promised that official registrations will be made for Myanmar migrant workers. The Thai Prime Minister requested the Myanmar President to render assistance in this matter, according to the Deputy Government Spokesman.

Thailand is not only a key trade partner for Myanmar but also one of the countries injected most investment in Myanmar.
